The Dark Deep Dungeons of Wicklow…
This haunted attraction does exactly what it says on the tin – it is a gaol from yesteryear. The conditions and atrocities of the time are visible. The stories are palpable. History is entwined in all the stories you will hear. The tour guides are very well informed. Their dress is authentic. They are infectious in their enthusiasm for their craft
Visitors come from places as far away as Van Demon’s Land and have found their ancestor’s names on walls and etched in the history. Emotions run high when they find a connection with the gaol – and the guides carry these stories for the next visitors. Each ‘cell’ which housed prisoners tells its stories. Audio visual aids and recordings help give the experience a boost – you will not forget your visit to this attraction.
You will visit all areas – landings where prisoners were housed. You will hear why the poor wretches were incarcerated – sometimes only for stealing a crust of bread to stay alive or feed their starving children. You will imagine their cramped, filthy conditions and experience the oppressive fear they must have felt. Society was so unjust in the days the gaol was in operation. The yard where prisoners were put to work on a useless tread-mill which bore no purpose but to torture prisoners is visible. A café which is open when the gaol attraction is open and also when closed is on the ground floor. It has a door leading to the outside. Their food is both good and delicious – a must stop place after your time spent in the gaol.
There is also a well stocked shop.
